Vice Mayor Ian Hugh

Cactus District - Meet Vice Mayor Ian Hugh
Ian Hugh was elected in November 2012 to represent the Cactus District and was almost immediately appointed to fill the district’s vacancy before beginning his official term in January 2013. In January 2015, and again in 2016, he was appointed Vice Mayor by his peers on the Council. He is currently serving his second stint on the Council as he previously served from 1986-91 and was Vice Mayor from 1990-91. Vice Mayor Hugh’s extensive resume in leadership also includes serving on the Glendale Union High School District School Board from 2004-2012, leading the School Board as President from 2011-2012. New on “Glendale Today” – Vice Mayor Hugh Talks With Broadcasting Legend Al McCoy

Vice Mayor Ian Hugh of the Cactus District takes viewers for a musical ride with Phoenix Suns broadcaster and Glendale resident Al McCoy on his new edition of the TV show “Glendale Today”.
The Vice Mayor joins viewers and diners as he sits down with McCoy at Polo’s, the popular family-owned Glendale restaurant, to enjoy a lively piano performance from the TV and radio personality and legendary voice of the Suns. The program highlights McCoy’s childhood growing up on an Iowa farm and the beginning of his love for sports and broadcasting, along with his 45 years of broadcasting Phoenix Suns basketball games. Viewers will learn firsthand the origins of his famous sayings like “Sha-Zam!” and “Heartbreak Hotel”.  Vice Mayor Hugh and McCoy also discuss his love for Glendale and why he continues to call it home. New on “Glendale Today” – Vice Mayor Ian Hugh Showcases Family-Owned Downtown Businesses
On this new edition of “Glendale Today”, Vice Mayor Ian Hugh of the Cactus District profiles three family-owned businesses along Glendale Avenue. Vice Mayor Hugh talks with Nancy Hagadorn of ‘Kiss the Cook’, restaurant, Irma Arellano from the bakery La Purisima and Polo Blanco and Elizabeth Dore from Polo’s Italian Cuisine about what keeps people coming back to these very popular places. Vice Mayor Hugh takes viewers on a tasty ride through these kitchens so they can experience first-hand the culinary talent involved in creating the delicious dishes served. They will see home-cooked comfort food made from scratch and a yummy candy kiss at ‘Kiss the Cook’ as well as Mexican-style pastries, cakes and cookies and homemade tortillas and burritos at ‘La Purisima’, and they will learn how two popular dishes, lobster ravioli and New Zealand mussels are prepared at ‘Polo’s Italian Cuisine’.  Polo’s also features live jazz entertainment Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Glendale Today with Vice Mayor Ian Hugh Highlights Public Safety Training
Glendale Vice Mayor Ian Hugh of the Cactus District takes us to the Glendale Regional Public Safety Training Center in his new edition of the TV show “Glendale Today.” Vice Mayor Hugh talks with Glendale Police Lieutenant Earl Montgomery, an 18 year veteran with the force, on how the facility is used to train public safety officers for the real life situations they encounter on a daily basis. Vice Mayor Hugh gets a first-hand look at the many features of the facility, including the driver training track, the shooting range, Taser reaction training and the interactive use of force and tactical judgment simulator. Viewers get a rare glimpse inside the state of the art, 56 acre facility that hosts an annual average of 50,000 students and visitors and provided more than 23,000 hours of police officer and fire-fighting training last year.

Glendale Rotary Club donates stuffed animals to Fire & Police
The Glendale Police and Fire Department accepted donated stuffed animals from Councilmember Ian Hugh on behalf of the Glendale Rotary Club. The stuffed animals are used by police officers and the Crisis Response Unit to comfort young children who have been affected by a traumatic event. This year, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers has made it his personal goal to help collect 2,000 bears for the police and fire department and has solicited help from community partners. Watch video

Glendale Today with Councilmember Ian Hugh on Manistee Ranch
Glendale Councilmember Ian Hugh of the Cactus District takes us to one of the most historic places in Glendale, Manistee Ranch. One of Councilmember Hugh’s guests is Louis “Buzz” Sands, whose family lived in the home which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Other guests include the President of the Glendale Historical Society, Ron Short, and the Vice President of the Glendale Historical Society, Carol St. Clair. The show is filmed on location in one of Manistee Ranch’s four buildings on four acres, which can be visited by anyone who wants a taste of Glendale history. Watch Video
