Irrigating with Gray Water. Gray water can be a reliable source of water for desert landscapes. Clint Culberson and Michael Gettens with Galaxy Gardens will share how they plan and install simple gray water systems. Discover how to send gray water from laundry machines, handwashing sinks, baths, and showers to your landscape.

The Dirt on Compost. Compost is the “black gold” essential to successful vegetable gardening, especially in the Southwest. Discover how easy it is to produce your own magical soil amendment. Kirti Mathura, garden author, has over 17 years of experience working at the Desert Botanical Garden and is currently the Program Coordinator for Smartscape at the University of Arizona’s Cooperative Extension.

Bird Walk and Talk at the Xeriscape Garden. Take a leisurely stroll through the Glendale Xeriscape (low-water-use) Demonstration Garden that surrounds the Glendale Main Library. Joe Ford, with Sonoran Audubon Society, will lead a guided tour on bird and plant species, followed by a plant exchange. To create a successful plant exchange, participants are asked to donate seeds, plants, and cuttings from their collection. We recommend wearing close-toed shoes, a hat, and sunglasses.

Creating Drought Resilient Landscapes. The Southwestern United States, including Arizona, has been in a drought for more than 22 years. Is your landscape equipped to thrive in our dry climate? Increase the resiliency and health of your landscape, while saving time and water. Jonathan Manning, certified arborist and local nurseryman, will share the tricks of the trade.

Water-Wise Strategies for Vegetable Gardening. Are you looking to improve water efficiency in your vegetable garden? Melissa Kruse-Peeples, Master Gardener and educator, will share how a water-wise edible garden can save money and produce a healthy harvest. This class will cover planting schedules, plant variety recommendations, and simple DIY techniques to save and recycle water.
