Glendale is prepared for water needs now and in the future.
The federal government declared a first-ever “Tier 1” shortage on the Colorado River, reducing the amount of water that Arizona receives from the river. This shortage went into effect on January 1, 2022 and is the result of many factors, such as long-term drought conditions and over-allocation of the river. There is no immediate impact in 2022 on Glendale’s ability to meet the water needs of our customers.
Key Points
A secure water supply. Glendale has developed a strong water resources portfolio, including Colorado River water, Salt and Verde River water, and groundwater. If any of our higher priority Colorado River water is reduced, there are plans in place to help replace a portion of the water loss. This will come from water stored underground.
There is a plan. The City has a comprehensive Drought Management Plan to deal with potential short-term and long-term water shortages caused by drought to ensure sufficient water supplies.
Conservation matters. The City’s diverse water supply is reliable and resilient, but we never have enough to waste. Being responsible for the water we have is up to each of us. That is why Glendale has invested in a comprehensive Water Conservation Program to help city departments, residents, and businesses use water more efficiently.
Preparation & Planning
Arizona has been experiencing drought for over 21 years. Glendale has made significant investments in our infrastructure, diverse water supplies, water reuse, underground storage, and conservation programs.
The City has worked closely with the Arizona Department of Resources (ADWR), the Salt River Project, and the Central Arizona Project (CAP). We have been preparing for this shortage for decades and will continue to do so.
Glendale has a 100-year Designation of Assured Water Supply (DAWS) from ADWR. This designation ensures residents, businesses, and investors that there are sufficient water resources for all existing and planned developments within the City’s water service area.
