The information on this page should give you some guides in learning to be a web site editor. We provide links to the website editor training videos, some tips and tricks when you are using the system, and a comprehensive web style guide for making your content.

Here are some tips and tricks for using some of the basic portlets.

Quick Link Portlet

Use this to make a vertical icon driven link menu. A great replacement to just text. The interface also uses a new icon selector. No more having to go and copy/paste font codes.

Detailed instructions can be found in the help "?" in your editor toolbar.

Department Contact Portlet

This portlet will site in the left Nav area under the GlendaleOne link. It is used to note the contact into or Department head of your area. Much of this is configurable and customizable. The "Contact Me" link at the bottom can be used for email or a link to a bio page or any other page/link.

To make the URL an email, use the format "mailto:[email protected]" (or any other email address)

Drag this portlet into the main section. The result will be on the left.

Fill in the fields like so (Profile Photo should be about 240px x 240px)

Making Links

Everyone, as we get closer and closer to the big reveal we want to share some tips or hints on doing things in the site to conform to the best practices of making web pages. We’ll try to roll these out periodically as we come across them given that most of you will be engaged in the site going forward. We’ll try to make them as brief and simple as possible. We will start creating a library with these tips on the intranet as well.

Links (Quicklink portlets, hyperlinks, images as Links)

  1. Until the site is live, all links should only reflect the information after the URL name (Glendale.hosted.civiclive.com) if possible. This allows the admins to change the URL name to glendaleaz.com and NOT break your link. In our case, pages won’t break but when we switch to www.glendaleaz.com as our URL, the users won’t see that in the address bar. They will see the CivicLive link instead.
    1. NO: https://glendale.hosted.civiclive.com/cms/One.aspx?portalId=15209085&pageId=15329400
    2. YES: /cms/One.aspx?portalId=15209085&pageId=15329400
  2. Open in New Window or Same Window **see below for example
    1. NEW Window: Links to external pages OUTSIDE our site, document, some apps
    2. SAME window: Internal pages
  3. Tooltips – The tooltip is what’s read back to a screen reader as well as what pops up on hover of the link. It should be plain English words and short but relevant to the link.

If you think you have internal links opening in new windows, are using the address with the CivicLive.com name, or need to add or improve your tooltips, please do so. Having this as clean and consistent as possible will help improve the user experience and minimize any confusion.
