05/09/2021 Critical Incident Briefing

This is a “Critical Incident Briefing” of an officer involved shooting that took place on Sunday, May 9, 2021 near the intersection of Grand Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The incident began after officers responded to a robbery call at a convenience store located near that intersection. Officers were alerted the suspect had left the business and eventually located him at a nearby mobile home community. When officers located the suspect, he was seen hiding by some parked cars and he began making verbal threats to shoot our officers. At one point, the suspect had his hands pointed towards officers as if he was attempting to use lethal force against them. Officers then fired several rounds at the suspect and despite life-saving efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

There are two separate reviews of an officer involved shooting: an internal review and a criminal review. Once those individual reports are finalized, those reports will be sent to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO) for a further review. Once they complete their review, MCAO will send their finding back to the Glendale Police Department and a “Response to Resistance Board” is convened. The board is made up of subject matter experts and members of our community. Their purpose is to determine whether the use of force was within policy. Upon completion of both reviews the information is sent to the chain of command and those findings will be made available once they are complete.

Please note, this process may take several months or longer to complete.
