GRANADA ESTATES ANNUAL SERVE DAY HELPS BUILD SENSE OF COMMUNITY
Hundreds of Volunteers Help Neighborhood Beautification Project

An army of volunteers descended on Glendale’s Granada Estates Neighborhood, Saturday, October 2. They painted homes, assisted with yardwork, landscaping and added addresses to curbs. It is all part of the Granada Estates Annual Serve Day.

This effort was made possible by the Granada Estates Coalition which consists of citizens, churches, non-profits, businesses, universities, Sahuaro District Councilmember Ray Malnar and several Glendale departments including Police, Code Compliance, and Community Services. The Coalition was a brainchild of Allen Bartimioli, a resident of Granada Estates and a local pastor. The purpose of the Coalition is to improve the lives of people living in the neighborhood. This Coalition provides an example of how a community can effect positive change for a neighborhood.

With the leadership of Sahuaro District Councilmember Ray Malnar, the city and volunteer groups identified Granada Estates as an under-resourced neighborhood and organized the first Serve Day more than a decade ago. It has continued to grow since that time as more organizations have joined the effort.

“Serve Day at Granada Estates was a huge success in early 2020 and is a great success in 2021,” says Councilmember Ray Malnar. “I would like to thank the hundreds of volunteers who signed up to help their fellow neighbors beautify the community. Special thanks and recognition goes to Faith Bible Church, Venture Church, Glendale Firefighters Charities, Local 493, Glendale PD, and Glendale’s Community Services staff. In addition, thank you to ABC Sand & Rock and Home Depot for donating materials that made this neighborhood beautification project a success.”

Other groups taking part in Serve Day include, Arizona Christian University, Midwestern University, Glendale High School, Ironwood High School and individual volunteers.
