The city of Glendale is pleased to announce the appointment of John Kennedy as the parks and recreation director. Kennedy brings more than three decades of experience running parks and recreation systems in Arizona and the Midwest, including serving as the assistant director of parks and recreation for Glendale since 2021, making him the ideal candidate.

“John is a natural fit as he has been working closely with the department in a senior leadership role,” said Glendale City Manager Kevin Phelps. “He understands the priority we have set with restoring and rebuilding our parks, and his vast leadership experience is needed for the team to continue to thrive.”

In this role, Kennedy leads the team responsible for over 80 parks, recreation programs serving residents with more than 100,000 visitors, three community centers, two recreation centers, 46 miles of trails, nearly 8,000 sq. ft. of meeting space at the Civic Center and four splash pads. Additionally, he oversees the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which is focused on reinvesting in infrastructure to maintain existing facilities and create inclusive programming for all residents of Glendale.

“I’m honored to serve as the parks and recreation director and am focused on making a positive impact on the department and the amenities that make up the parks and recreation of Glendale,” said Kennedy. “I’ve dedicated my career to parks and recreation and am committed to continuing to enhance the community and promote healthy lifestyles for everyone to enjoy.”

Kennedy is filling the role following Jim Burke’s retirement at the end of 2023. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Illinois State University and is a certified park and recreation professional through the National Recreation and Park Association.
