Got Citrus? City Of Glendale To Celebrate Legacy Of Martin Luther King Jr. With Fruit Gleaning Event And Citrus Donations

The city of Glendale is offering a unique way for anyone in the public to roll up their sleeves and honor the legacy of the late civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., while helping put food in food boxes for families in need.

What: MLK Day of Service, where hundreds of volunteers will help glean fruit from the trees in two historic city parks. We are also seeking donated citrus from homeowners from their own trees to bring to the event. Volunteers will be ready to help unload the citrus donations from your vehicles and the vitamin-rich fruit will be given to St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, which will provide it to families.

When: 9 a.m. to noon on Jan. 18

Where: Sahuaro Ranch Park (9802 N. 59th Ave.) and Manistee Ranch Park (5127 W. Northern Ave.)

Why: Dr. King advocated for peace, unity and service, working hard to creating change in his community. The city and its partners, along with the many volunteers in Glendale, also are dedicated to improving residents’ lives. These donations will brighten the lives of families who could use a hand while beautifying city landmarks and bringing people together for a day of enjoying outdoor activities.

Who: Glendale employees, HandsOn Greater Phoenix, St. Mary’s Food Bank and volunteers in the community
