04/14/2022 Critical Incident Briefing

This is a “Critical Incident Briefing” of an officer involved shooting that took place on Thursday, April 14, 2022. The incident took place near the area of 61st Avenue and Olive Avenue. Officers were responding to a domestic disturbance at a nearby apartment complex. The suspect was violating a court order and showed up unexpectedly at his girlfriend’s apartment. When officers arrived, the suspect had left the apartment complex and was spotted pointing a gun to himself and officers. The suspect managed to get away from officers but was eventually located inside a trailer parked near the apartment complex. Officers surrounded the trailer and negotiated with the suspect to surrender himself peacefully to police. Officers repeatedly sent into the trailer a K-9 to get the suspect to surrender. During one of those attempts, the suspect shot at officers injuring the K-9’s handler. One officer responded by fatally injuring the suspect.

There are two separate reviews of an officer involved shooting: an internal review and a criminal review. Once those individual reports are finalized, those reports will be sent to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office (MCAO) for further review. Once they complete their review, MCAO will send their finding back to the Glendale Police Department and a “Response to Resistance Board” is convened. The board is made up of subject matter experts and members of our community. Their purpose is to determine whether the use of force was within policy. Upon completion of both reviews the information is sent to the chain of command and those findings will be made available once they are complete.

Please note, this process may take several months or longer to complete.
