‘GO GREEN’ AND SAVE CASH WITH GLENDALE’S WATER REBATE PROGRAM
Expanded water conservation program allows big savings for water customers
The city of Glendale is making it easier than ever for residents to “go green” and save some cash with its expanded water conservation rebates.
The city of Glendale’s Water Services Department recently received a $450,000 grant from the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority (WIFA) to pay for the expansion of these rebates, which will be used to enhance the existing water conservation program. This program provides financial incentives to Glendale water customers who undertake water conservation efforts and water-efficiency upgrades.
Those who have single-family residential properties can save money when they permanently reduce the amount of water used through the installation of xeriscape and/or artificial grass at new homes or convert grass lawns to xeriscape and/or artificial grass at existing homes. Xeriscaping is a type of landscaping or gardening that uses Arizona-friendly plants that require little to no irrigation to thrive in arid climates. Residents can reap the benefits of a new home xeriscape installation by receiving a rebate of up to $500 for xeriscape (50 cents per square foot) and up to $250 for artificial grass (25 cents per square foot). The benefits are even greater for existing home xeriscape conversion, which allows residents to get up to $3,000 for xeriscape ($1 per square foot) and up to $250 for artificial grass (25 cents per square foot).
Multi-family properties, homeowners’ associations, commercial properties and schools that receive water from the city of Glendale also can cash in on the benefits of practicing sustainability. They are eligible to apply for rebates on landscape conversion, installation of WaterSense toilets and irrigation controllers and utilizing water-efficient cooling tower technology. The city of Glendale provides a rebate of up to $100 for those who replace older, inefficient tank toilets with new water-efficient, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense labeled toilets. WaterSense toilets are certified to effectively flush at a volume of 1.28 gallons per flush or less. To qualify, the toilets being replaced must meet or exceed the existing federal standard of 1.6 gallons per flush, and the new toilet must be a WaterSense-labeled product listed on the WaterSense Product Search.
Residential water customers can also reap the benefits of saving cash, and water, while doing laundry. The city of Glendale provides a rebate of up to $200 for the replacement of inefficient, older clothes washers with energy and water-efficient EPA ENERGY STAR labeled clothes washers. To be eligible, the new clothes washer must be an ENERGY STAR labeled appliance listed on the ENERGY STAR Product Search with an Integrated Water Factor (IWF) of 3.2 or lower.

Everyone needs to do their part to use water wisely.”
These water-conservation measures offer proven, long-term water savings as they use this precious resource more efficiently.
Removing grass and converting to a desert-friendly landscape can save about 36 gallons of water per square foot. Up to half of the water used outdoors is wasted because of inefficiencies in the irrigation system so retrofitting aging irrigation systems with highly efficient components and upgrading to WaterSense technology can help reduce water waste and boost the overall water-efficiency of the system. And indoors, operating a WaterSense-certified toilet reduces water use by almost 10,000 gallons of water per year compared to older, inefficient models. An ENERGY STAR certified clothes washer uses 30% less water than regular models of these appliances.
Properties that receive water service from the city of Glendale, who are in good standing (i.e., they have no outstanding debt owed to the city) may apply for the rebates.
